Unloading the insert without NH3/ND3

  1. Go through all the following steps before you start this procedure, becuase you want to make sure to bring what you need to NM4 to avoid multiple trips to the Hall.
  2. Notify the Target Expert and the Run-Coordinator, and make sure the FNAL RCT and the team is available to join you.
  3. Pickup NM3 Key and NM4 Key.
  4. Ask the Target Expert to close the Gate-Valve and the GV-Bypass, and make sure the TO is at the counting-house with the WalkieTalkie.
  5. Ensure the Target Lifter position is in the lowest position.
  6. Check the liquid level in the fridge, if the level is > 50% then use the annealing heat to reduce the level below ~20%.
  7. Confirm that the collar, screws, tools (wrenche and allen-wrench) are there at the back of the hall.
  8. Confirm that the handle and the bolts to connect to the insert are there at the back of the hall.
  9. Take Cryo-Gloves with you.
  10. Wear Level 3 PPE: Coveralls, Gloves, Shoe-Covers.
  11. Access NM4, go to the target material prep-area.
  12. Ensure that you have the collar on top with the screws. If not, you will have to go outiside and bring, so it's better to confirm.
  13. Ensure that you have the 3/16-wrench, and allen-wrench with you to disconnect the microwave and NMR connectors. If not, you will have to go outiside and bring, so it's better to confirm.
  14. Bring the cart with all the tools and parts towards the cryoplatform and stop at where the ODH sensors are (near the stairs to the cryoplatform).
  15. One person should go to the cryoplatform and open the backfill line gHe supply, set the regulator to ~ 4 psig, and make sure the cylinder level is at least above 500 psi, and then and come back.
If you don't have enough gHe, then go back to the control room and inform the Target Expert to replace the gHe cylinder.
  16. Turn ON the Fans in the cave using the switch located near the ODH sensors.
  17. Enter NM3 with the cart.
  18. Leave the cart, near the Turbo-pump, specifically a the right-hand-side of the Turbo.
  19. Plug the power cable to the cave's light.
  20. Enter the cave with the tools (3/16 wrench, allen wrench), and the handle with the bolts.
  21. Open the two valves to backfill the fridge. Monitor the pressure gauge to make sure the pressure in the fridge is going up. It will take some time to get the pressure slightly above the atmospheric pressure. Until that, you can proceed to Steps 20, 21, 22
  22. Disconnect the microwave wave-guide and place it on top of the target lifter carefully. You will have to use the allen-wrench
  23. Disconnect the NMR cables from the connectors, you maybe able to disconnect by just rotating the connectors by-hand, if that doesn't work use the wrench just to make the connector loose enough, and then disconnect the NMR cables and propely arrange it away from the fridge.
  24. Confirm that the 0.5 psig relief-valve is relieving gHe by listening the sound that comes when you hold your hand/palm to close and open that valve's mouth. If you don't hear that sound, then check again the pressure gauge to ensure that you ar e still backfilling the fridge, and wait until the fridge is backfilled completely.
  25. Make sure that you have a blanc-off to close the fridge once the insert is taken-out. If not, stop the work, Close the two backfill valves, exit NM3 , then go to the cryo platform, close the gHe supply cylinder to backfill, and go to the counting-house and bring a clamp with you to continue (you will have to open the gHe cylinder, regulator again on your way back to NM4 to proceed on this procedure).
  26. Connect the handle to the insert and tighted the screws, and connect the hook to the handle.
  27. Wear the cryo-gloves and grab the hook connected tot the pulley.

42. (Person A) Use the crucible tongs to Pick up the target bottle we intend to use to take the material from the target cups. Remove the cap from the empty bottle, screw the funnel on the bottle, and soak it into the LN2 tub to pre-cool.
43. (Person B) Loosen the nut on the collar to rotate the target insert, and loosen the nut on the stand to adjust the height of the target insert up and down before unloading the target material from the target cups into the target storage bottles. Ensure that the nut on the collar is not removed.
44. (Person B) Place a small amount of the target material from the cup into the empty bottle, then soak the target cups back in the LN2. Repeat this step until the target bottle is full. (Hazard: ammonia spill, Mitigation: Immediately evacuate according to the emergency plan if ammonia spills on the ground).
45. (Person A) Use a Q-tip to help move the target material beads into the target bottle from the funnel if necessary. Once the bottle is full, close the cap on the bottle. (Hazard: cryogenic splash, Mitigation: Person A handles this step using long tools wearing cryo glove)
46. (Person A) leave the filled target bottle in the LN2 tub.
47. Repeat steps 42 to 46 to fill the two bottles that we intended to fill with the target material.
48. (Person A) If some target beads floated in the LN2 bath, use a crucible tong or strainer to fish them out and load them in the target bottles.
49. (Person B) can remove the empty insert from the LN2 tub, hang it on the wheeled rack, and place the collars around it.
50. If the target material has been irradiated in the beam proceed to procedure 10735 to package the material for shipment.
51. If the material has not been irradiated (Person A) Remove the target canister from the target material dewar, remove the paper stopper, put the target bottles back in the canister, put the paper stopper back in, and put the canister back in the target material dewar.
52. Leave the LN2 tub in the area until all LN2 evaporates (it takes about 30-40 minutes). Keep the no-entry fence tape until the LN2 is completely gone.
53. In beam conditions RCTs perform wipes and surveys of the work space and tools
54. Workers removes PPE and frisk in accordance with the job specific RWP and under RCT guidance in beam conditions.
55. Notify the Fire Department and copying Emergency Management, ELO, Division Safety Officer and Fire Protection after completing the procedure.
56. Worker A and B return noise dosimeters to IH staff to read results and determine and administrative controls necessary for the remainder of the work shift.

Evacuation and Rescue plan:

Scenario 1: Spill Of Liquid Nitrogen

  • In the event of a full dewar falling down onto the ground only, all workers are to evacuate immediately and call emergency at 3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone. Provide details of the spill or splash to the dispatcher to determine the necessary level of emergency response. If a spill or splash on a person or cryo-injury happens, all workers are to evacuate immediately and call emergency at ext. 3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone. Emergency response will provide immediate care for exposure or injury. After treatment, the Fermilab Occupational Medical Office (FOMO) will need to be notified of the injury. Follow-up care can be provided by FOMO.

Scenario 2: Spill Of Anhydrous Ammonia Into Liquid Nitrogen Bath In NM4 Handling Area

  • If ammonia beads are spilled into the liquid nitrogen bath while loading/unloading the target insert, floating beads will be recovered with the target material strainer, collected, and placed back in the storage bottles used to load the target insert.
  • Beads that have sunk into the liquid nitrogen bath will be left in place. When the procedure is complete the liquid nitrogen bath will be moved in front of the HVAC ventilation system to evaporate. Personnel will leave the roped work area and not return until evaporation is complete.
  • If the ammonia beads spilled were activated by the beam an RCT must perform a survey and contamination check before use of the tub.

Scenario 3: Spill Of Anhydrous Ammonia Onto The Ground In NM4 Handling Area

  • If an anhydrous ammonia storage bottle falls onto the ground in the NM4 Hall, person A or B could pick it up using cryogenic gloves and place it in the LN2 tub within 20 seconds. If the storage bottle rolls away from the HVAC vent more than 4 meters, all workers should immediately evacuate the NM4 Hall. Inspect bottle before continuing use.
  • If an anhydrous ammonia spill onto the ground in the NM4 Hall occurs, all workers are to evacuate immediately to the NM4 key tree.
  • After evacuating the chemical spill area, call emergency at 3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone.  Provide details of the spill or splash to the dispatcher to determine the necessary level of emergency response. Emergency response will provide immediate care for exposure or injury. After treatment, the Fermilab Occupational Medical Office (FOMO) will need to be notified of the injury. Follow-up care can be provided by FOMO.
  • Note: Contaminated clothing and shoes should be removed and cleaned for residual chemicals before reusing them.

Scenario 4: Spill Of Liquid Nitrogen During Transfer Rack Movement

  • If liquid nitrogen spills from the blue target insert transfer dewar while moving the target insert in the transfer rack, the ammonia in the target insert will start to sublimate in 20 seconds if not submerged.
  • Both workers should immediately leave the equipment in the immediate work area.
  • Exit NM3 and/or NM4 by dropping the interlock if in controlled access and leaving the door open.
  • After evacuating the enclosure, call emergency at 3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone.  Provide details of the spill or splash to the dispatcher to determine the necessary level of emergency response.

Scenario 5: Ammonia Audio Alarm (With Blue Warning Light), Or Ammonia Spill/Sublimation In The NM3 Target Cave

...

  • Exit NM4 and call x3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone
  • Notify anyone in NM4 control room of the incident in the enclosure
  • Proceed to the NM4 assembly area in the north parking lot to greet emergency response team.

...

  • Exit NM4 and call x3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone.
  • Notify anyone in NM4 control room of the incident in the enclosure
  • Proceed to the NM4 assembly area in the north parking lot to greet emergency response team.

...

  • Exit NM4 and call x3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone
  • Notify anyone in NM4 control room of the incident in the enclosure
  • Proceed to the NM4 assembly area in the north parking lot to greet emergency response team.

Scenario 6: ODH Audio Alarm (And Red Warning Light) In NM3 Target Cave

  • If the ODH alarm goes off while performing work in the NM3 target cave:
    • Both workers should immediately leave the equipment in the immediate work area.
    • Exit NM3 by dropping the interlock if in controlled access and leaving the door open.
    • Exit NM4 and call x3131 from a Fermilab phone or 630-840-3131 from a cell phone
    • Notify anyone in NM4 control room of the incident in the enclosure
    • Proceed to the NM4 assembly area in the north parking lot to greet emergency response team.
