There are many different types of searches within the system.
Global Search Bar
The Search Bar in the top-left corner of your screen can be used at any time from any screen.
Using this bar, you can search for:
All or part of a profile name (First Last)
UVA ID number
All or part of a Case Number by using the format #XX-XXXX
(The pound symbol, year the case was created, sequential number the case was assigned)
Note: archived reports from the previous ODOS system, Advocate, are listed in SafeGrounds by their original Advocate case numbers)
All or part of a Profile's contact information fields, such as phone number or address
Format for searching phone numbers: XXX-XXX-XXXX OR XXX XXX XXX
All or part of a student organization name
Badges next to an individual profile name indicates if the person is an employee, student, and/or organization. If a badge does not appear, that individual is not an active student or employee.
Note: Past students and employees may still appear active due to lack of data base purging. We are working to get this issue resolved.
Users with appropriate permissions can use the All Cases page (listed in the Main Menu) to search for case related topics.
You can also search more efficiently using the filter options within the All Cases page. Only cases that a user has permission to view will appear in All Cases.
Main Menu Search
There are three main search functions under the Search tab in the Main Menu: Text Search, Advanced Search, and Contact Search.
Text Search
This function searches for key words within case fields (Documents, Incident Descriptions, Case Actions, and Case Notes).
 | Each result will display the title of the case field written in blue. Click it to view that case. |
 | The results will display a preview of the text |
 | The text you typed in the search bar will be highlighted throughout the preview |
 | The search bar where you will enter your criteria. |
 | If entered in quotations, your text will appear as a full phrase, rather than just separate words. Honor Loan will yield results using that specific phrase, not just results with the words honor and loan |
Advanced Search
This function is a more specific way to search for profiles (individuals or student organizations) based on information that you may already have (an address, part of a name, phone number, etc.).
| You can search a name, part of a name, words, addresses, phone numbers, and many other nonspecific identifying information in the Full Search Text |
| Use any of the filters to sort through results from your full search. |
| If searching for the profiles of undergraduates who live at a particular address, search for all or part of that address in the Full Search Text, and filter based on Is Student (Yes) |
Contact Search
This function allows you to search for people or information that may be listed in an individual's emergency or parent contacts.
| Search for an individual by entering known information about their contacts. |
| If you have the phone number for someone that called about a student, but the name of the student was not given, you can search for that phone number by emergency or parent contact, until you receive a return on a student profile. |

These additional functions/features across SafeGrounds, may help you find information more quickly or easily:
Any time users view a grid of information in SafeGrounds, a search bar within the grid will allow you to search for any data point listed and filter arrows will appear next to fields that can be sorted.
