You may want to add alternate names to your Knowledge Map. For example, Mumbai was known as Bombay under British colonial rule, so adding both names can provide important historical context. To add an alternate name:
- Edit the Knowledge Map
- Learn more with Edit a KMap
- Click Names
The Names field will show you current names
- Click New Name
A page with metadata fields for your new name will open
- Enter your alternate name in the "Places" field
- Fill out the rest of the fields
- The "Etymology" field lets you write a brief summary of the name's origin
- Click Create
You'll see your new name appear, with additional metadata options
- Add optional Citation, Notes, and Dates for your name

Set Display Name
The highest-priority name becomes the default name for a Knowledge Map. This is the name viewers will see on the Subjects or Places tree, and on the Knowledge Map labels within content in Mandala.
- Edit the Knowledge Map
- Click Names
The Name field will show you current names
- Click Change prioritization of names
A page to change priority of names will open
- Click and drag the name you want to default to the top of the list
This name will become the default name for the KMap
