Use Context
The landing page is the first page of the application guide. It gives an overview of the application and its uses, then introduces the application guide's content. Landing pages are broad and welcoming. Generally, they are suited to users willing to explore the guides — these users do not use the search bar to find the information they need. They also give users an overview of how tasks and guides fit together.
Content Components
Purpose | Style | Sample text | |
---|---|---|---|
page title | states the name of the application. | See capitalization in the general style guide. | Arstor WordPress |
introduction | introduces the application and its uses. The last few sentences provide examples of projects that use the application. | The introduction should be an untitled paragraph. | The Artstor Digital Library is an online database of images in architecture, the arts, humanities, and sciences. Members of the UVa community have additional access to collections specific to the university. Students and faculty can find images within the Artstor Digital Library for use in teaching, class assignments, and research. For example, a professor could locate a high-resolution scan of Picasso's Guernica within the ArtStor collections. Using Artstor, they could then zoom in during lecture to focus on specific pictorial elements germane to the discussion, and then share the image with students after class. |
more information | lets users know where they can get help with the application. | Additional information should be untitled and brief. | Artstor maintains its own clear and up-to-date guides to exploring and using Artstor collections. Find these guides at the Artstor Help Wiki: Finding Images, Viewing Images, Using Images, Presenting Images. |
guide section | a group of related step-by-step guides that consists of a friendly narrative and table of contents. |
| |
friendly narrative | provides an overarching introduction to using the guides under a section. | The friendly narrative addresses the reader in a casual tone. Within this paragraph, include links to the section's step-by-step guides. | First you'll need to create an account on the Artstor website. You must be physically located on Grounds in order to do this. If you're an instructor, e-mail Ann Burns, the media scholarship librarian at UVa, to get Artstor instructor privileges. Instructors can access additional Artstor features. Once you have created your account, log in to the Artstor website. After logging in, you can explore the Artstor homepage. A limited selection of tools is available on the Artstor homepage to users who are not logged in with an account. Without logging in, users have access to public image groups only and have access to fewer tools. You must be logged in to Artstor in order to explore all of the tools available on the homepage, such as downloading images, adding images to groups, adding images to PowerPoint, and downloading OIV software. You can search the collections of imagery on the website, including those exclusive to UVa. Once you have found your images, you can view them, share them, and organize them into image groups. |
table of contents | links to pages (step-by-step guides, tutorials, or orientation guides) in a section. | List pages in the ideal order they should be read. | Create an Artstor Account • Log In to Artstor Administrator Privileges |
