Population – depending on the chosen data model, ‘population’ may mean patient (if patient data model is chosen) or prescription (if outpatient prescription model is chosen).  You can further specify this by choosing ‘My Patients’ when using patient data model or choosing ‘My orders’ when using outpatient prescription data model.

Slices – once population has been specified, choosing slices can ‘group’ (or slice) the population by various metrics.  For example, having specified the population of ‘My Patients’, you can slice that ‘population’ by age or whether patient has advance directive (Yes/No).

Measures – Most of the available measures are basic statistical measures of the already specified population.  For example, Percentage (of my patients) who does not have advance directive scanned into EPIC.

Dates – by default, the ‘lookback’ is set at 6 months.  You can adjust according to your needs.  There is a limit to how many rows of data can be displayed (100K??).  Additional feature here is to ‘slice’ the dates by year, quarter, month, etc..  This will divide the result of the report by these intervals

Visual Options – by default, this is the vertical bar graph.  Other options include, horizontal bar group, line graph, heatmap.  The most useful may be the ‘detailed’ view where you can a list of your results – which you can expand or collapse and to which you may add columns.

Visits – as in the Visit Data Model:  refers to ambulatory patient visits.

Visit type – describe what will happen during the encounter – eg. Follow-up Visit or Colonoscopy

Encounters – as in the Encounter Data Model:  refers to encounters of all types – eg. Inpatient, ambulatory, procedural - with few exceptions.

Encounter Type – describes the context of the encounter – eg. Hospital Encounter or Office Visit

Departments – in EPIC Hyperspace, ‘departments’ refer to location of care – whether it be a nursing unit in the hospital or a clinic location.  These are all prefixed by an abbreviation that are often incomprehensible to most users.  Below are selected common department abbreviations.  See Tip Sheet ‘How to find the department location you need’ for more details
